“The House of the Raja” explores the whispers and secrets of history in one of those places in the world whose memories have been deliberately buried : troubled Thailand’s Deep South. This neglected region, rarely visited by Westerners, is populated by a majority of Malay-Muslims whose forbearers once lived in an independent Sultanate, annexed more than a century ago by Siam. Today, the region is struggling due to reoccurring attacks by insurgents and state repression by Thai armed forces.
The project culminated with the publication of a book in August 2014, inspired by my experiences while living in a mysterious decaying Malay palace in the province of Narathiwat. Locals call it Rumoh Rajo –"The House of the Raja" in Malay.
